Swisscontact began its activities in Myanmar in 2014 and is currently implementing a flagship Program called the Vocational Skills Development Program (VSDP). The program is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). It is implemented in Myanmar by a consortium led by Swisscontact (the Swiss Foundation for Technical Cooperation) in collaboration with INBAS (Institute for Vocational Training, Labour Market and Social Policy).
The Program’s overall goal is gainful and market demand-driven employment or self-employment and better income for disadvantaged women and men in targeted areas of Myanmar.
VSDP 1 was implemented between 01 February 2014 to 30 April 2018. VSDP 2 will be implemented between 01 May 2018 to 30 April 2022.
VSDP 2 has four interlinked components:
1. The Hospitality Training (HT) component focuses on providing vocational skills training in selected hospitality occupations across tourism centres in Myanmar and institutionalising the training approaches successfully piloted in VSDP 1.
2. The Local Vocational Training (LVT) component focuses on improving the competencies of disadvantaged women and men in Southeast Myanmar in line with the demands of the existing labour market.
3. The Dual Apprenticeship Training component aims to strengthen the involvement of the private sector in skills development by piloting innovative ways of delivering training to apprentices hired by partner private sector companies.
4. The Policy and Stakeholder Engagement (PSE) component is cross-cutting in its approach: strengthening sub-national collaboration between different stakeholders engaged in skills development whilst simultaneously facilitating measures to support the labour market. The component also focuses on stakeholder engagement at national-level to further strengthen the support given to the National Skills Standard Authority (NSSA) on skills testing and certification.
Swisscontact is a strong advocate of sustainable tourism and as such, Swisscontact became a silver partner of UNWTO to show its commitment.
